Whew, this is another one that kept me up all night! Likable characters; sweet, lovely romance; razor-sharp plotting; a mystery that had me transfixed.....and I'm not into mysteries. But, boy, this one had me glued!

Lina had married out of pure economic necessity. She had herself and a sister to support, so it was marriage or the workhouse. Easy choice. She was a good wife to her young husband and he was sweet to her. He was also irresponsible and foolish which got him killed in an accident. Soon, she realized she's pregnant but not before the solicitor had already notified a cousin that he is now the earl.

Colonel Winstead, a struggling gentleman farmer, received the solicitor's letter with great relief, thought himself the new earl, piled his little daughter and brother into a coach and headed for Yorkshire. Well, not so fast. Win arrives only to learn of the pregnancy and he may, or may not, inherit. It all depends on the gender of the baby some eight months down the road.

So things are at a standstill. Lina, a good woman, is living with her sister in the dower house. Win, a good man, is living with his family in the manor. An unlikely friendship develops between the two rivals that's fun to read. It soon becomes clear that someone is intent on harming Lina. But later an attempt is made to kill Win. Now I'm really confused.

Later on a romance begins to develop between Lina and Win. Strange as it may sound, the romance seemed both appropriate and sweet. In the meantime, foul deeds are being done.

I enjoyed the secondary characters as well.

There was only one small part rather late in the book where Lina fell out of character. That whole piece seemed ludicrous to me. It was only brief and didn't affect my pleasure and interest in the story, though It did merit knocking off half a star.

This story may not be any better than some I've given 4 stars to, but I figure that anything that keeps me reading all night deserves 5 stars! :)

A sweet and lovely read, An Heir of Uncertainty was a fantastic historical romance. I loved this book! From the romance to the mystery, it was just wonderful.

Lina was a great heroine. She was very strong, determined to survive with dignity, and willing to do anything to take care of herself and her sister. I thought she was lovely and I really liked her.

Win was also wonderful. This man was so sweet. He was very caring and protective of Julia (his daughter), Freddie (his younger brother), and, later, Lina. He was clever and determined to take down a murderer to keep his family safe. I absolutely adored him.

The romance was lovely. Lina and Win were so good together, despite the mistrust between them in the beginning. Not to worry, it doesn't last long, because it didn't take very long for them to start falling for each other. And, the chemistry between them was sizzling from the moment they met that led to a couple of very steamy scenes. I thought they were a perfect couple.

I liked the secondary characters in this book, and how they were treated as their own entities. Julia, Win's daughter, was so adorable. Freddie, Win's brother, was a bit odd, but in a way that was rather endearing. And, Cassie, Lina's sister, was interesting, to say the least. I liked how all of them were done.

The plot was fast paced and I was hooked the entire way through. The mystery of who was behind the murder attempts kept me on the edge of my seat. I never suspected who it turned out to be. It was literally the one person I didn't suspect at one point throughout the book, which is quite a feat. I thought the mystery was brilliantly done. I really enjoyed the story and the ending was perfect.

An Heir of Uncertainty was a brilliant historical romance. I totally loved this book. It had lovely romance, thrilling mystery, and was a truly enjoyable read. Romance lovers, this is a book you don't want to miss.

Since her debut in 2012, Alyssa Everett has become a favorite author of mine. Her stories are well-crafted and beautifully written. In An Heir of Uncertainty, she deftly mixes romance and mystery. When a distant relative dies, Colonel Win Vaughan unexpectedly inherits a wealthy earldom. Upon arriving at his new estate, however, it turns out that the widowed countess is pregnant. If she has a boy, he will be the earl, and Win will once again be a struggling farmer.

Win finds himself falling for Lina, but he is also the prime suspect when someone tries to kill her. Lina, in turn, is attracted to him, but can she trust him with her heart and her safety? The romance builds slowly and beautifully, while the air of danger builds bit by bit. It's Romancelandia, so certainly there is an HEA, but not the way you think . . . .

Alyssa Everett has published only four novels, but they are all original, well-written and highly recommended.
