I am a fan of Candace Camp's historical fictions. Some of them, like Indiscreet, A Stolen Heir series, the Mad Moreland series, etc are just too good. This one, though nice enough, is not quite there. The heroine, Cassandra, though refreshingly not the most beautiful girl of her times, is a bit dry. I really wanted to like her, and I did, because she is so ordinary, so down to earth and a bookworm to boot, like me, but she fails as a romantic heroine. Probably because her insecurities regarding her looks are not explored, and given her very practical and independent nature, her sudden combustion into deep passion at the hands of an insipid Phillip seems a bit unbelievable. Unlike regular heroines, she is plain, dirt poor, intelligent, responsible and quite logical and lucid in her thinking. All definite pluses. What lets her down is the hero, Sir Phillip. He is too good, too forgiving, too helpful, too kind. And she walks all over him. And he lets her. She demands his help and insults him when he sounds suspicious. Even nowadays, the less polite times, 'demanding' help is rather looked down upon. But Phillip refuses to point that out to her. She keeps suspecting him, and he keeps brushing it off and forgiving her before she even mouths a proper apology, and insists on helping her no matter what she says or does. A bit of a backbone and plain speak from him might've stopped her from looking like a shrew. As for the chemistry between them, it's a bit dry as well. In some of Camp's works, the chemistry between the leads fairly sizzles the words describing them, but nothing like that here. Because you find Cassandra's personality far more impressive than that of Phillip, and the plot more interesting than their kisses, and a pouting Joanna's wiles more tasteful than the leads dry passion. I almost found myself wishing that Joanna would succeed in trapping Phillip, so that we could skip the cold passion plays and move on with the story. Cassandra and Phillip are more suited to be friends and collaborators than lovers. Three stars for the story, the hunt, the twins, Joanna and Cassandra, the unconventional heroine. Zero for romance.Tags : Impetuous [Candace Camp] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <em>Loving the enemy is one thing. This book, Impetuous, starts well, but the suspenseful part of the plot just seems to me to be overly long and drags on forever--not enough sexual tension for me. However, all of her books are always a great escape. Although I would not put Impetuous on my keeper shelf, in a few years I would gladly read it again.
Candace Camp always delivers! Her stories are well written, low on typos, and very entertaining. Her themes are fresh - not just a repeat of previous stories.
Once I had started reading, I literally could not put it down! This book does not have as much intimate moments as Indiscreet does, but I think that is why I like this one as much as I did. The moments they did have romantically were great and the story was pretty good. The ending was kind of just dropped on you but I didn't mind. The shipping took a little longer than I would have thought but overall I am very satisfied with my purchase )
This excellent book is very interesting. Story is very good and gives you a great time for reading it. My big reccomandation for reading this book
Cassandra started out as a strong female character, then turn silly at times, back and forth. Sir Philip was an okay hero, nothing terrific either. The story was interesting. Cassandra's aunt and cousin brought comic relief to the story. All the other characters kind of faded into the background.
This is the first book I've read by Candace Camp but it will not be the last! I was given this book by a friend and I'm so thankful! What a breath of fresh air! Sir Philip Neville's, ahem, misstep shall we say? Was fantastic and set the tone for the whole book. Cassandra was relatable, and you loved her from the start. It's much more than a cinderella story but you kinda get that feeling with the wicked aunt and cousin who are dense and cruel. I loved how she added in a second storyline with the great treasure hunt and mysterious thieves and made it compliment the romance so completely. I enjoyed it very much, and will look for more of Candace Camp's books in the future.
When passion overrides common sense, anything spontaneous can happen. Who hasn't acted impulsively when we want something, whether for treasure or love. Impetuous is a perfect title for this romance novel from the get go. I've never read a RN about treasure, so I enjoyed the history betwn the 2 main characters, Cassandra & Sir Philip. Very cute couple, I thoroughly enjoyed how their romance progressed fr the beginning, also some of their humorous encounters along way.
In the end, it really does end w/ the old adage, "love is the best everlasting treasure" or "one can't place enough value in love."
Either way, if romance is what ur lookn for, the story won't disappoint.
