I was moved so much reading Duel and Jessie's story in KNIGHTS ON THE TEXAS PLAINS. This book was so rich in the western scenery and history that the scenes unfolded reading as if you were there seeing it all happen right in front of you. There were times I laughed, times I cried reading this book. The love story between them and their love for Marley Rose was a joy to read. The book flowed so beautiful as I read it, that it was difficult to put down. I feel in love with the characters and felt like I knew them myself after reading this story. I so much look forward to Luke's story in THE COWBOY WHO CAME CALLING. Linda Broday is an outstanding author I look so much forward to reading more of.
In 1880 in Cactus Springs, Texas Duel McClain believes he has nothing to live ever since his loved ones died. However, he still almost has cardiac arrest when he draws the Deadman's Hand in a poker game and nearly suffers a stroke when a nasty player raises the ante by tossing a female infant Marley Rose into the pot. Duel wins and decides to take Marley to his sister in hope she and her husband will adopt the child.

A badly battered bloodied Jessie Foltry wanders into Duel's camp. The blood is not hers, but the bruises testify that someone beat her up and branded her shoulder with a diamond J. Jessie and Duel reach an agreement to keep Marley safe. On the trail they begin to fall in love, but when they reach his home, his brother a Texas Ranger arrests Jessie for killing her husband. Duel stands with the woman who has brought him back among the living as she stands trial.

KNIGHT ON THE TEXAS PLAIN is a graphically vivid western romance that focuses on spousal abuse and to a lesser degree child abandonment. The story line is at its strongest when a bewildered Duel "consults" his horse on what to do with his new dependents as this tells so much about the hero. Jessie is a wonderful protagonist but her inner strength that enables her to easily overcome her traumas contradicts her remaining in an abusive relationship for years. Linda Broday shows her talent with her ability to paint a three dimensional picture of life in post Reconstruction Era Texas.

What a Great story!! I love Linda Broday's books. I read some of her short stories in a couple of books with other authors and wanted more by her. . She did not disappoint me. Your heart goes out to Jessie who is actually the main character. Duel is her hero and the Knight she falls in love with. The little girl Marley Rose will capture your heart with all the precious things she says and does. It is a story about the horrible abuse of a sweet lovely woman. You can't help but feel her pain. Duel's past is sad too, but the love these two share gives them hope and strength. The animals will touch your heart as well, and Marley Rose loves them so much. A lot of love in this book, but a lot of sadness too. This one goes way at the top of my list of books to read again. There is a sequel to to this one which I read first, as they are listed on the site I use as Novels, but this is more of a series. The second one is Luke's story called The Cowboy Who Came Calling. Another excellent read. I am not sure if the last one called Redemption is related or not....but I sure do intend to find out!

Easy reading, very nice western romance.
I should have checked this author out better. It was not a christian book as I thought so the language was worse. The story was ok
I liked the characters and the storyline went very well. Baby Marley was too adorable. But this ok read is limited because of inconsistencies (initially the baby was thin and scrawny and suddenly the baby was chubby.duh).....and the redneck dialogue. Tedious to read "maw" and betsy's garters, etc... for 200 pages.Frankly the characters were too good for that type of sterotype stuff. I found it demeaning. Where y'all is delightful, the maw thing goes to distillary south..........sorry linda.
